Thanksgiving is a wondrous time… friends, family, and delicious food. The guest of honour of the evening is no less than the turkey itself. There are so many turkey recipes for all types of cooking, but this one is very dependable. It’s super easy, and just as tasty. There are very few ingredients, and it’s very general, so you can personalise it to your own taste. Your guests or family will love this turkey every time; they’ll be blown away.
Ingredients
10 pound whole turkey with the giblets and neck removed
4 cloves crushed garlic
2 tablespoons of seasoned salt
1/2 cup of butter
2 cans of carbonated beverage (best would be cola flavoured)
1 apple that is being cut into 4
1 onion that is being cut into 4
1 tablespoon of garlic powder
1 tablespoon of salt
Method
Before you start with anything, you need to set the temperature of your electric smoker to preheat 225º to 250º Fahrenheit.
After that, you need to rinse the full 10 pound whole turkey and dry it by patting the turkey.
Once you have rinsed it, you then have to rub the seasoned salt and crushes garlic into the skin before arranging the turkey on a roasting pan or aluminium baking plate.
After you have placed the turkey onto the roasting pan, you can then start to stuff the turkey cavity with the rest of the ingredients which includes garlic, onion, apple, salt, cola and butter.
Once the preparation stage is done, you can insert the roasting pan with the turkey on it into your electric smoker and start smoking for about 10 hours.
To get an awesome smoke turkey, you will need to baste it with its dripping at an hour intervals.
After about 10 hours, you should check the internal temperature of your turkey. If the temperature inside the turkey is roughly 180º Fahrenheit, you can remove it from the smoker and serve immediately. If you decide to feast on it later on, you will need to store securely.
In Summary
This recipe also works in a coal smoker, but it does work best in an electric smoker, plus there is less clean-up. As for the flavour of wood chips or pellets, this recipe is versatile. It tastes great with hickory wood chips or even bisquettes, but there are many, many options to suit your mood and your guests’ moods. Since this recipe includes fruit, you could also go with a fruitier flavour of wood chips like apple or orange.
The slow method of this smoking is very good for the large piece of turkey. It will break down the fats and make this meat delicious for whatever occasion you’ve got it planned for. The fruity aspect of this recipe makes it perfect for Thanksgiving, but there are certainly other options.
