Looking for a guide on how to build an outdoor pizza oven? We’ve got you covered. Read on.
There are many different types of pizza oven which ranges from small clay ovens to larger concrete ovens. Building a brick oven is a complex process; it needs a proper planning to construct the outdoor oven. Wood fired ovens will cook at very high temperature around 400 degrees Celsius.
You have to decide all the factors required to build an outdoor pizza oven including budget, size, location, time, and finally what you wish to cook. You can also find the permanent location for the oven and build a sturdy stand for it.
Items Required for Building the Oven
- Bricks
- Cement
- Drill
- Builders’ sand
- Sharp sand
- Wood screws
- Wood saw
- Spade
- Wooden pallet
- Trowel for brick laying
It may be confusing for you to decide the quantity but that completely depends on the size you decide to build. When cooking with wood-fired oven you can rise even to high temperature as it may not crack, but when heated with standard building bricks it may lead to cracks.
Create the base
After you’ve decided the location for pizza oven just lay the pellet down and make sure it is kept horizontal. Use the wood saw to finely cut a portion of chipboard so that it can perfectly fit at the base of the pellet. Cut about 50mm of chipboard strips to create a border around the top of the pellet. There should not be large gaps between the boards because it will form the seal to hold the concrete in.
Brick construction
As soon as you create the base arrange and then lay the bricks in the right position before fixing them in a location. You can chop the standard house brick into a half so that you can attain more shape for your pizza oven. Simply arranging the bricks can help you to know the exact count needed before constructing the oven.
Arch
The next step is to create an arch which forms the roof of the area, it is two-thirds the height of the oven. Make use of a layered cardboard to create the elegant curve on which the archway bricks rest. Why create a curved archway? Because you can use the weight of the bricks which rests on each other to provide support.
Cementing the Bricks
One of the most important things is to cement the ground layer of bricks using a correct mix of sand as well as cement. Just lay the cellophane sheet upon the base layer and cover it with sand. Then a sand mold is created so the bricks can be supported on the sand, it is wrapped in plastic sheet to avoid the risk of sticking inside of the oven.
You can cement the chimney at this stage, build it taller than the door as it helps the smoke to travel out of the chimney. Once the concrete is dried carefully remove the supports of the archway.
Now it’s time to cook, by creating a small fire then allowing it to slowly dry the interior of the oven. Have tasty and crispy pizzas!!! Happy cooking and I hope you’ll enjoy your cooking experience with your friends.
