    Rec Tec Grills Buyer’s Guide

Key Things to Look for in a Rec Tec Grill

The amount of consistency and precision of a grill is going to change depending on the unit’s ability to keep a consistent temperature through all weather conditions. Of course, there are a lot of different things to think about when you are buying a Rec Tec grill in addition to that.

    PID Control

This is probably one of the biggest selling points of a Rec Tec Grill. Essentially, it measures the temperature inside of the grill so you can adjust the cycles by keeping the desired level of heat throughout the meat as you cook. This feature also helps to add the pellets in at the right time so you know that the grill has the right cooking temperature.

    WiFi Connectivity

Wifi connectivity is a super handy feature to have in any grill. Using the wifi connectivity, you will be able to control your Rec Tec pellet grill right from your phone, computer or tablet. This also means that you don’t need to control the grill manually so you can get on with your other activities while you grill away.

    Secondary Cooking Racks

You should always doesble check whether an extra cooking rack comes with the grill or whether it’s something optional that you can add on. Secondary cooking racks are handy because they can help you to make the most out of your cooking space.

    Inputs for Meat Probes

Some Rec Tec grills come with controllers that will have a separate output for the meat probes. This makes it easy and very simple to track the temperature of the food you are cooking and you don’t need to open the lid. All you will need to do is insert the one end into the meat and then plug the other one into the control board.

    Meat Probes

While your grill may be able to accommodate a meat probe it doesn’t necessarily mean that it actually comes with a meat probe. You should always check the control boards before you try to get a meat probe to make sure that they are able to connect properly. If you have a programmable one it is also possible to use it to regulate the temperature in the grill as you need to.

    Cooking Area and Size

It’s possible to find Rec Tec grills in a range of different sizes based on your individual requirements. You can get built in pellet grills that you can use with an outdoor kitchen, or you can get portable models that you can use for camping. You will need to check the dimensions and cooking area in order to make sure that the grill suits your space and lifestyle.

Usually Rec Tec pellet grills come along with two different cooking surfaces, the primary cooking area and the total cooking area (which consists of secondary racks and the main cooking grate). If your family is around an average size then you can get a grill that comes with a cooking area of around 450 to 500 square inches. If you are often going to be dealing with large groups of people, you will need a larger grill.

    Temperature Ranges

Of course, this is going to depend on the kinds of foods you plan on cooking on the grill. A lot of the units mentioned here are very effective at indirect heating and are easily able to get to any temperatures from 180 to 500 degree Fahrenheit. Generally, the standard temperature range is okay for baking, roasting, grilling and smoking. If you are going to be searing you’re going to need temperatures that go above 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Price

A good quality grill is going to give you a fantastic, consistent performance that will likely last you for many years. With that being said, if you opt for a cheaper grill you’re going to spend less initially but it’s not likely to last as long so you may need to spend more money in the long run by getting a replacement.

    Construction and Build

It’s always important to focus on the quality of the build. This is because if the grill is made out of poor quality materials then the components of the grill may start to break down after a couple of years.

You should always try to check out the joint, welding and any other hardware to make sure that the heat won’t escape. Always check reviews and product specifications if you are looking online for a grill.

Rec Tec are actually well known for their stainless steel pellet grills because they’re very durable and provide fantastic performance. In addition, having a high quality construction and materials will save some energy too, costing you less in the long run.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you operate a Rec Tec Grill?

Once you turn the grill on, the processor of the smart grill will begin to energize the igniter rod inside of the grill’s firepot. From here, it adds the fuel in order to begin the fire, and after a few minutes of waiting you will be able to smell and see the smoke. After a while, the smart grill processor will add more pellet fuel for you to reach the temperature that you need. It will keep this temperature up while you cook.

What’s better: Traeger or Rec Tec?

It can be a little tricky to choose a winner between these two companies because they both have incredible products with their own pros and cons. Many users do prefer Traeger grills to Rec Tec grills. Some other people prefer to go for Rec Tec grills, however, due to the Smart Grill technology. It generally just comes down to personal preference, though.

    Are Rec Tec smokers good?

The biggest problem with Rec Tec smokers is that they tend to be a little bit expensive. There are a lot of great features in these grills though so they’re certainly a good investment. The price tag is worth it, as the manufacturer makes very durable products with a lot of functionality and advanced features. They are also all covered by a 6 year warranty.

Where are Rec Tec grills made?

Generally, Rec Tec grills are made in China and the USA. The body of the grill is constructed in china, but the vast majority of the grill, including the advanced technology is made in the USA. The powder coat is made in the USA and the grills are put together in the Rec Tec facility in Georgia.

Is Rec Tec better than Louisiana Grills?

As far as price and easy set up is concerned, Louisiana grills are a better choice than Rec Tec. With that being said though, if you do have some more money to play with, then you’re better off getting a Rec Tec model. As far as construction is concerned, Rec Tec is definitely better and they consume less pellets.

In addition to this, they don’t tend to have as many features as Rec Tec grills.

What are the biggest problems with Rec Tec grills?

While Rec Tec grills are made out of quality materials, they generally are not totally resistant to rust. Some people that have used Rec Tec grills before have said that the auger doesn’t always work properly. The brand does offer an excellent warranty though so even if you do have problems you can get the assistance of Rec Tec’s customer service.

Is it easy to clean Rec Tec grills?

Rec Tec grills are generally really easy to clean. The grills are easy to clean, and the grills come with grip pans so if you cover the grill with aluminum foil all you need to do is wipe it down.

Can Rec Tec grills be used in any weather?

Yes! Rec Tec grills are constructed well and feature impeccable quality workmanship which means that no heat escapes from the grill and no cold air is able to get in. You should opt for a cover though just for some extra protection.

Is the heat distribution even on a Rec Tec grill?

Rec Tec grills have very even heat distribution. A lot of them use a patented PID algorithm that means the temperature is kept even across the whole cooking area. It also keeps track of the temperature to make sure that it’s correct.

In addition to this, the grills also tend to come with a heat deflector built into the fire pot, and a blower fan which helps to keep any hot spots away. There is also a drip pan that ensures you don’t get any flare ups.

Will my food taste nice with a Rec Tec grill?

You bet! Of course, a lot of this will come down to how you prepare. Before you start cooking, you should preheat the grill between 400 and 500 F for 10 minutes. It will be all ready to cook then. You should then bring the temperature down to around 180 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which means you can slow cook for long periods of time if you need to.

    George Foreman Grills Buyer’s Guide

Why Buy A George Foreman Grill?

There are a bunch of different grill brands out there, but why George Foreman? There are a lot of benefits to investing in an electric grill like the George Foreman, and actually it can sometimes be better than your normal charcoal or gas grill. That’s not the only reason why you should buy a George Foreman Grill, though.

To start with, you don’t need to worry about fuel. Electric cookers eliminate the need for fuel so you won’t have any issues with lighting up the grill. The weather also won’t get in your way.

George Foreman grills also come with a fat reducing feature, where they are able to drain the fat out of the food item. It’s part of the reason why they are called the Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine.

Electric George Foreman grills are also quite efficient on energy, and there’s no need to wait for it to heat up for ages. It literally only needs to be on while you’re using it. No need to wait ages for it to get up to temperature and no need to wait for it to cool down afterwards.

Finally, George Foreman Grills are also very easy to clean. They usually come with non stick coating that allows you to be able to clean the grates using a towel, and you don’t even need for them to fully cool down. Some of the models also have dishwasher friendly grilling plates.

Things to Think About When Buying a George Foreman

    Grilling Area

Not everyone has the same needs as far as grilling area is concerned. It’s possible to guess the amount of food that you are able to put on the grill by analyzing the grilling area. The amount of space that you need is largely going to depend on how you plan to use it. For example, if you’re cooking for a whole restaurant you’re going to need a larger surface area than you would for just your family. If you’re looking for a grill just to feed a small family, then an area that is able to accommodate around 4 to 5 servings may work. Alternatively, if you plan on entertaining with the grill, you will need a larger surface area, like something that can accommodate around 12 to 15 servings.

George Foreman also offers a grill that lies between these two options, providing you with enough space for around 9 servings. Mmm, just right!

    Outdoor / Indoor

George Foreman design some grills just to be used outdoors, whereas there are other that are only suitable for use indoors. If you do prefer to grill outdoors then you should look for a grill that has removable stands attached. It’s possible to use these kinds of grills for outdoor purposes. Some of their grills can be used both for indoor and outdoor settings!

    Removable Plates

The vast majority of George Foreman grilling plates tend to have a nonstick coating and this makes them much easier to use and clean. All you need to do is grab a wet sponge and then wipe off the residues. You can also clean it with a towel and cold water.

    Floating Hinge

Floating hinges are perfect for keeping the grill in place as you cook. Generally most George Foreman grills come with an adjustable floating hinge, which means that you can adjust the grill in accordance to the thickness of your food and cook it as you like. You may prefer a fixed hinge though if you have no particular use for a floating hinge.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the uses of a George Foreman Grill?

These grills have a bunch of different uses. It’s easy to think that you are only able to cook your standard hotdogs, burgers and meat with it but there truly is more to it than what meets the eye.

You can cook fish, meat or bacon on a George Foreman grill and you don’t need to worry about the fat. It can even be used to make waffles! You can also use it to dry an egg. All you will need to do is use the drip tray to lift up the front end, and this will stop the egg from sliding off so you can cook the egg as you normally would.

You can also make paninis and other pressed sandwiches using these grills. You just need to preheat the grill and then place the sandwiches inside. You can also make cinnamon rolls and quesadillas on the grill.

Now this may come as a surprise – you can make pizzas on your george foreman grill! All you need to do is put the grill upside down and then preheat it. In roughly 5 minutes you will get a crispy crust pizza.

    Are George Foreman Grills healthy?

They are well known for being healthy grills. They have a slanting design in the grill plates which allows the extra fat to drain from the food. This ultimately means that the overall amount of calories is reduced and there is less saturate fat content, so it’s healthier than what you would get from a grilled item in an oven or a charcoal grill.

Do George Foreman Grills tend to come with Removable Plates?

The vast majority of George Foreman Grills come with removable plates, which means they’re easy to clean. You just need to take the plates out of the grill once you’ve finished cooking, wait for them to cool and then throw them in the dishwasher.

Is it possible to use aluminum foil on a George Foreman Grill?

Aluminum foil is pretty handy for keeping a grill clean, and thankfully it’s completely fine to put aluminum foil onto a George Foreman. You should remember, however, that this can sometimes increase the length of the cooking time. You’re also not going to get any grilling lines on the food with alumnium foil which may spoil your aesthetic.

Is it possible to cook bacon on a George Foreman Grill?

You can cook a lot of different things on George Foreman grills. Thankfully, bacon is included in the list of things that you can cook on these grills. The grill plates on these grills also make it faster and easier to cook bacon. They also remove any excess fat from the bacon which means it’s healthier to eat. All you need to do is put your bacon slices inside of the grill, close the lid and leave it for 2 or 3 minutes. Just flip the slices over then and repeat this process.

How do you clean a George Foreman grill?

It’s actually pretty simple to clean a George Foreman grill.

Firstly, you will need to wash the dish tray either by hand or in a dishwasher, then you air dry the tray on a dish rack or a towel.

It should be noted that some grills come with removable plates, and you can either hand wash these or put them in the dishwasher, though this depends on what you prefer. If the grill doesnt come with removable plates then you will need to wipe the inside of the plates down using a soapy washcloth.

Then, once you have hand washed the plates, just rinse them off in the sink and then dry them gently using a soft towel.

You should try to avoid scrubbing the plates using metal scouring pads, as these can damage the nonstick finish that George Foreman grill plates usually have.

When washing the outside of the grill, just wipe it down using a wet washcloth. Make sure that you do not get the electrical connector wet – this is usually on the back of the grill. Also make sure that you are careful when you are replacing the plates and the drip trays back onto the grill. If they are wet then they can damage the electronics inside of the grill.

    Pit Boss 820 Review – Buyer’s Guide

In our review below, we’ve gone through each key feature of an at-home grill and seen how the 820 measures up. Read on to find out what we think of the Pit Boss 820t:

    What does it burn?

The Pit Boss 820 is a pellet burning smoker. Many die-hard Smoker fans swear by using wood and coal, as it does allow for a more complex tasting smoke. However, in recent years there has been a huge development in the type of smoking pellets that companies can produce. Pit Boss now sells a range of flavored smoking pellets that emulate the complexities of burning wood and coal. The other benefit of burning pellets is that it gives you a much greater degree of control of your Smoker’s temperature. This makes cooking those cuts of meat that take all day a lot simpler.

    Temperature Control

The Pit Boss 820 comes with a temperature control dial on the firebox. Using this dial allows you to control how many pellets are being fed into the fire, and therefore you are given a large degree of control over the grill’s temperature. Not many other grills come with this feature – for us, this is one of the stand-out elements of the Pit Boss 820, and really adds to its value for money. Not only does it add a new level of easy to barbecuing – no more charred meat – but it also means your pellet use will be more efficient and you’ll be able to save money there.

    Cooking Range

Due to this temperature control system, the Pit Boss 820 offers an amazing temperature range of 180 degrees to 500 degrees. Being able to control the temperature to this degree means that you can use your grill for a lot more than cooking large cuts of meat.

    8-in-1?

Pit Boss advertises its 820 range as an ‘8-in-1 grilling experience’. This is not something we 100% agree with, it’s mostly an advertising phrase from Pit Boss. However, this is an incredibly flexible grill, users at every level of experience will find it a joy to use. It will be great for beginners and pitmasters alike.

    Grilling Space

The Pit Boss 820 boasts a grilling space of 820 square inches, across two shelves. This is a medium-size grill in the Pit Boss range. This is a traditional sized smoker (which are roughly 680-740 square inches), with an extra shelf that offers an extra 80 square inches of grilling space. Although some people may prefer having one, flat long grilling space, we really appreciate having the extra shelf as it gives the grill a lot more versatility. For example, if you’re using our Aaron Franklin Brisket recipe, you would be able to use the larger shelf to cook the brisket undisturbed and use the upper shelf to cook smaller pieces of meat at the same time so you can show off even more at your next cookout. This grill has enough space to fix a brisket, two sets of ribs, and a handful of vegetables on it at the same time.

    The Reviews:

Finally, let’s look at what Pit Boss’ customers have to say about the Pit Boss 820. 68% of its reviews on Amazon.com are 4&5 star reviews. Its reviews are overwhelmingly positive – with users mostly raving about its ease of use. There are also many positive reviews for the quality of Pit Boss brand pellets, for providing complex flavorings that rival wood smoke. The Pit Boss 820 comes in multiple colors, and a few users seem to have had issues with the paint on the all black grill peeling at higher heats. A few users have also complained that the pellet feeding system can occasionally get blocked (when using non-brand pellets), and is difficult to take apart to clean.

    Our Final Thoughts

So, is the Pit Boss 820 any good, and is it worth the money? Firstly, let’s talk about how the Pit Boss 820 compares to the other Pit Boss grills. If you read our list of The Best Smoker Grill Combinations you would have seen us talk about the Pit Boss 720. Our main complaint about this machine is that it wasn’t big enough for a large cookout.

With the extra 100 square inches and second shelf, the Pit Boss 820 makes up for this shortcoming, whilst not taking up any extra space in your backyard. As we mentioned earlier the Pit Boss 820 is a medium-sized grill for Pit Boss. However, for us, it is the perfect size for anyone who wants to use it at home.

If you are a professional pitmaster you may find the 820 is too small, and we recommend looking at the larger grills in this series.

However, if you just want a grill to use at home cookouts then this one really is a perfect size.

So, does the Pit Boss 820 do everything you want it to?

As we’ve mentioned we think that the Pit Boss 820 is pretty much the ideal size for home cookouts. We’re also really happy with how it performs. The temperature control options that Pit Boss machines provide really is second to none. Having the ability to set and maintain your grill’s temperature without constant maintenance is going to take the vast amount of stress out of your cooking experience. With this control, a whole new world of cooking on the grill will open up to you, you will be able to experiment without fear. We love making full breakfasts on a low heated grill! Why not try making smoked pancakes… You’ll thank us later! We have to admit that before the Pit Boss 820 – we didn’t have a preference between wood or pellet burning grills. But the 820 has converted us. The amount of control that the pellet-burning system of Pit Boss grills gives you it’s hard to argue against using pellets. We did see a few users complaining that the feed in the grill got jammed when they were using non-Pit Boss brand pellets, so we would recommend sticking with the Pit Boss range. Doing this may add to the cost of your cookouts but in our eyes, it’s worth it. However, being able to control how many pellets are fed into the flame will allow more efficient use of materials and save you money that way. We also noticed that a few users have had issues with the paint on some of the models peeling. So we would recommend doing a little more research into this before purchasing for yourself. Finally, we want to talk about how good the Pit Boss 820 looks. We love Pit Boss’s twist on the classic grill. The 820 is simplistic in a sleek way. It comes with space to store tools on the side and beneath the main grill. The wheels make transporting the grill easy. We also appreciate the compact firebox and smokestack. We should note that there are multiple complaints about how difficult the firebox and pellet feeding system is to clean.

So, in conclusion, yes the Pit Master 820 is completely worth the money, and we would highly recommend it. So get out there and start barbecuing!

  • BBQ 101: The Best Ways to Cook Different Types of Steaks for Grilling

BBQ 101: The Best Ways to Cook Different Types of Steaks for Grilling

Do you know the different types of steak that you can cook? Our beginner’s guide will get you up to speed.

We eat over 220 pounds of meat each year so it’s high time we learn how to cook it like a pro! When it comes to beef, steak is king, however, it can be very easily improperly cooked.

That is why we have created this simple guide to teach you the best cooking techniques for the many different types of steaks for grilling. From Ribeyes to Filet Mignon we have got all of the favorite cuts covered, so let’s get started!

    Types of Steak

When selecting a steak for grilling you always want to look for good marbling and color. Never buy a steak that looks grey, pale, or brown. Visiting a butcher to pick out a steak is the best practice. A butcher will offer you a more personalized experience and can help you select the perfect cut.

When you purchase steak prime cuts are the best option, however, they are the more expensive type of steak. If prime cuts are out of your budget then look for choice cuts instead.

Different dishes do well with different cuts of meat, for example, tacos and fajitas pair perfectly with a Skirt steak or Hangar steak, and for a traditional steakhouse-style dinner the Filet Mignon or Porterhouse are great choices.

    Ribeye

The Ribeye is a juicy well-marbled steak that is perfect for grilling. The fat content in this steak makes it rich and delicious and lends to the quality flavor of this cut.

    ribeye

You can find boneless or bone-in cuts of this steak. If you grill your steak with the bone-in your steak will take longer to cook, however, the result will be more full flavor.

Ribeyes are a great steak to use the reverse sear technique because of their size. To grill your steak with this technique you can cook it low and slow on the cooler side of your grill until it reaches close to your desired doneness. Then to finish off the steak move it to a high heat area of the grill to create the perfect char.

    Skirt

The skirt steak could not be any more different than the ribeye. This steak is a long and thin cut with marbled fat throughout. This type of steak is best for tacos, fajitas, and salad because of its tender texture and the fact that it is served sliced.

When cooking a Skirt steak you should use a marinade. The marinade will not only impart flavor to the steak but it will also help to tenderize the meat and make it juicier.

When you cook Skirt steak you will want to cook it quickly on the grill over high heat. When the steak is finished cooking it should be sliced against the grain before serving.

    Top Sirloin

The Top Sirloin is flavorful and versatile. You can use this cut for kabobs or grill it whole with lots of salt and pepper. This cut of steak is very firm and lean. Because of the lack of fat in this steak, you will need to be mindful of overcooking as it will make the steak tough.

Cook your steak on medium-high heat on the grill to a medium-rare temperature for the best results. This steak is a great steak to serve topped with butter cooked mushrooms and onions or melted blue cheese crumbled to add richness and fat.

    Filet Mignon

The Filet Mignon is one of the most sought after cuts of beef. It is incredibly tender with an almost butter-like texture when it is cooked properly. The Filet is naturally lean but still very juicy.

Because of the leanness of this steak, it pairs well with sauces and is excellent when bacon-wrapped. The Filet Mignon steak is best when cooked to a medium-rare temperature. Because of the thickness of the steak, it can take a little bit longer to cook and it is another steak that is a good candidate for the reverse sear technique.

    Flat Iron

The Flat Iron steak is an affordable yet delicious steak that does well with a variety of seasonings and marinades or just salt and pepper. This steak is second only to the Filet in terms of tenderness and has beautiful marbling. The Flat Iron has an intensely beefy flavor that is brought out perfectly when grilled.

The steak is thinner than a Ribeye or Filet so it will cook faster than other steaks. Be careful not to overcook the Flat Iron as it will become tough and lose its tenderness. This steak is a good steak to served sliced and topped with a rich sauce or grilled onions.

    Porterhouse

The Porterhouse steak is a steak lovers dream! This steak has both the Filet and the New York Strip separated by a T-bone which helps to impart delicious bold flavor to the cut. The Porterhouse is so full of flavor that it needs only to be seasoned with salt and pepper.

This steak should be cooked over high heat to achieve a good sear and then finished on a cooler side of the grill until the desired doneness is achieved. For the best result, cook the Porterhouse to a medium-rare temperature.

    New York Strip

This steak is a wonderful steak for grilling. It is leaner than the Ribeye but still has some fat and marbling that help create the bold beef flavor the steak is known for.

The New York Strip should be cooked on a high heat grill and then finished on a cooler side or cooked with the reverse sear method if it is a thicker strip. This steak is a great option for those with a high-protein low-fat diet.

Choosing the Best Types of Steaks for Grilling

These types of steaks for grilling are crowd favorites that do excellent on the grill. When cooking your steak always remove it from the refrigerator at least 20 minutes before grilling. Doing this will help keep your steak tender and help it to cook properly.

When your steak is finished cooking never slice into it right away! If you do this your steak will lose its juices and become dry and tough. Instead allow your steak to rest for 10 to 15 minutes and then slice and enjoy!
