Griddles vs Grills – What is the Difference?

Griddles vs grills: What is the difference between the two? What are the benefits of using either of the appliances? Read on to find out.

Grills and griddles can be used interchangeably for some dishes, but not for all types of food, because of their different surfaces and the amount of heat used to cook the food, the spread of heat over it, and the time it takes to cook in terms of the two, they are different. Therefore, it is important to know the differences between them and their characteristics.

Stove or countertop grills and griddles are often considered interchangeable, but their two types of cooking surfaces are designed for different types of cooking. Let’s see their differences now.

    Griddles

The griddle is similar to a heated plate, including a flat, horizontal metal facade and obtains a primary heat source at the base. Food is heated immediately without a handle or supportive side on it. These are great for restaurant use and inadequate enough to fit in the middle of a field between burners.

Most traditional oven or electrical griddles are rectangular, which provides you more numerous space to cook other dishes than a conventional round pan. It appears with the most abundant metal around, providing superior heat preservation and cooking quality. Also, thin metals form an even cooking surface.

    Why Use Griddles?

A griddle has a uniform and smooth surface, delivering it perfect for preparing breakfast dishes such as French toast, pork, pancakes, sausage, homemade fries, and eggs. Also, you can utilize this griddle to prepare grilled quesadillas, cheese sandwiches, and anything else you can regularly cook on a frying pan.

While maximum hot plates are circular, these griddles are frequently manufactured with rectangular. You can use it indoors or outdoors to suit your convenience, and this usage scale varies depending on the home or business kitchen.

    Grills

There are brace types of grills produced and sold in the market. One is composed of substantial amount of iron or steel plates and the other is originally designed with bars utilized to prepare food straight over the open flame. Recently, the kamado grills are popularly used at most of the BBQ parties.

    image of grills

Excessive heat causes the metal to turn brown where its contact with food, this brownish shade is identified as a Maillard reaction, and that’s because the sugar is caramelized by the intense heat.

    Why Use Grills?

Grilling is a healthy approach to cook meat, and when you pair it with vegetables and meat, it doesn’t take away from the flavor instead it improves the flavor. Because you can control the temperature of many modern grills by using this, it is easy to adjust the grill to maintain the air and moisture of the meat, which offers quality and premium taste to the meat. You can grill with gas, wood, or charcoal, and each type of grill has its novelty.

Griddles vs Grills: What is the Difference?

The grids have flat, smooth cooking surfaces. But the grills have a substantial space for plate or bars have peculiar ridges. The fuel for these two is the same.

Both the grill and the grills operate on charcoal, electricity, or gas. Grids heat the entire metal surface and usually turn the food to brown. But the grill cooks the dishes with its hot wires and gives it the color it deserves. Grilling uses a much higher temperature than griddles.

In either case, heat or flames are never close to the food. So it has minimal contact with the flame, allowing for a more controlled way of cooking.

Best Block Knife Sets Under $200 – Buyer’s Guide

Knife sets are an essential part of the kitchen. Block knife sets offer greater convenience for the chef in terms of storage, safety and efficiency. The right block knife set greatly enhances your cooking skills, and improves your overall cooking experience.

As you can see, there is a wide variety when it comes to block knife sets available in the market. Choosing the one that works perfectly for you should be a well-informed decision. Purchasing a block knife set under $200 is still a significant investment to make.

Here’s a short and useful buyer’s guide that will help you pick the best block knife sets under $200 to match your needs.

    Block Style

Since the main appealing feature here is the ‘block’ design, you should probably first consider the style of the product. Some knife sets come in wide blocks while others have more of a small, but longer knife block. It all depends on your personal preferences as well as the overall theme going on in your kitchen.

    Number of Knives

There are block sets with as few as four knives, and there are also sets that come with 22 or more knives! Again, it depends on your needs. If you’re looking for more than just the basic chef’s knife and utility knife, for instance, you should opt for one that has a greater variety of knives.

    Material

This includes both the material of the knife block as well as that of the knives. For the block, the most popular and durable option is wood, but you can also go for graphite blocks if you want something unique and fancy. In terms of the materials of the knife, the ideal option is to choose knives made of high carbon stainless steel because they’re super long-lasting and high quality with handles made of wood.

    Sharpness

The quality of a knife set is most commonly determined by its sharpness levels. A dull knife is not likely to do you any good in the kitchen. In fact, a dull knife can be dangerous since you can cut yourself while struggling to work with a dull blade. It’s best to go for knives that have a reputation for maintaining their sharpness for a long time. However, they’re equally risky to use if you don’t know how to properly handle them. You must exercise great care and caution while using them.

    Handle

A knife with an uncomfortable handle is almost useless because it poses a serious health risk. The handle of the knife needs to be well-designed to offer you maximum comfort and ease of use. Go for a knife set that has knife handles with ergonomic design.

    Weight

The weight of the individual knives in the set matters a lot. The weight of the entire block doesn’t really matter since it will be sitting on the counter top. Some people prefer working with heavy knives, while others like light knives. Choose a knife set that offers you tools with the weight you’re comfortable handling.

    Construction Type

If you’ve ever shopped for kitchen knives before, you’re probably familiar with the terms forged, full tang, high-carbon, etc. These basically refer to the type of construction of the knives. Each type is associated with distinctive uses and benefits.

Forged knives are believed to be the most durable, sturdy, and top quality. If you’re aiming for maximum durability, forged knives are ideal. Each knife is made individually under extreme heat conditions to give them their respective shapes and high durability.

    FAQS

What is the difference between a paring knife and a chef’s knife?

A chef’s knife is the major cutting tool used in cooking and is also referred to as a ‘general-utility knife.’ It’s the knife you use to cut different things on the cutting board, from fruits and vegetables to large chunks of meat. A paring knife, on the other hand, is a small utility knife that is best used for peeling and chopping purposes.

Can I wash my knives in the dishwasher?

This entirely depends on the company and the model of the knife set that you have. Some knife sets are dishwasher-safe, while others should be washed by hand. Make sure to read the manual that comes with your knife set to find out whether it’s dishwasher-safe.

What is the best way to clean the knife block?

The first step is to take out all the knives and shake the block in order to remove any crumbs or debris that may have collected within the slots. Then, wash the block with warm soapy water and use a small brush to clean the knife slots. Once that’s done, dry the block in an upside-down manner and make sure that it’s completely dried before you insert the knives back into their slots.

Which kitchen knife is the most important of all?

The chef’s knife is easily the most important of all knives in your knife set because it’s the ultimate multi-purpose knife. It is the most versatile piece of equipment in the kitchen that can help you take care of a variety of cutting tasks while preparing your ingredients from slicing and dicing, to properly mincing them.

How should I keep my knives clean?

The best way to clean your kitchen knives is to hand-wash them individually, one by one. Rinse each knife carefully with soapy water and wash them thoroughly one after the other. Keep the knives on a paper towel to dry or simply hang them on the dish rack with their handles up.

How should I re-sharpen my knives?

Some knife blocks come with built-in sharpeners that allow a super easy and convenient way to sharpen the knives. However, if your block knife set doesn’t have one, buy a nice sharpener separately.

How should I prevent my knife block from serious damage?

The best way to care for your knife block and to prevent it from serious damage is to keep it in such a place where there are no sharp objects in close proximity. Objects with sharp edges can result in scratches on your knife block, especially if it is made of wood.

    Final Words

Owning a block knife set that offers you convenience in the kitchen does not always have to mean you should spend a lot on it. The right block knife set is a significant investment for any home or professional chef. Other than enhancing the overall aesthetic of the kitchen, it enhances your overall experience of cooking. The perfect block knife set also makes the kitchen a lot safer. It’s one of the most practical kitchen tools because all your knives are in one place and perfectly organized, too.

We are confident that after reading this comprehensive buying guide, you have all the information you need to make the right purchase decision for the best block knife set under $200.

Reverse Flow Offset Smoker Buyer’s Guide

People invest in a reverse flow offset smoker because they are passionate about grilling. They love to host parties and wear their chef hat and apron as they prepare a delicious and mouthwatering meal for their friends and family.

The last thing you want to do is to get disappointed by buying a reverse flow offset smoker that does not smoke and grill the meat as you envisioned. You do not want a badly cooked meal, especially if you are known for your grilling skills among close friends and family.

To save yourself from making a mistake, you need to consider several different factors. In our buyer’s guide, we have listed factors that you must consider when searching for, narrowing down, and comparing different reverse flow offset smokers.

    Should You Invest in It?

Reverse flow offset smokers are not exactly budget-friendly, which is why you need to ensure if it is worth the money.

If grilling is something you enjoy, invest in a durable and long-lasting reverse flow offset smoker, which will be expensive but the number of years it will last, including the delicious meals you will cook on it, will be worth the investment. Going with a cheaper option means routine maintenance, thus, the money you saved in buying the smoker will go towards fixing it. In short, choose a smoker that is within your budget and from a well-recognized brand.

Should You Choose Vertical or Barrel Offset Smokers?

You can choose between a vertical or barrel offset smoker, but which one is better? The difference between the two is how the cooking area is set up. Both are cylindrical in shape and perform well. The main difference is that the vertical smoker offers more cooking space, allowing you to cook several items at the same time.

Vertical smokers also take up less space. If there is no need for you to cook up a lot of food at one time, choose a barrel smoker. If a barrel offset smoker uses a reverse flow cooking method, it increases their cooking efficiency.

How Much Cooking Space Does It Offer?

For people who host large parties with a lot of guests, an offset smoker offering them ample cooking space will be a necessity. If you are hosting an intimate gathering with a few people, you can choose an offset smoker that does not offer a lot of cooking space.

The downside of having a lot of additional cooking space is that it will require increased maintenance and the price will be higher. You will still need to clean your offset smoker even if you do not use all the racks in it.

When you are cooking, the racks that are not in use will still be exposed to juices, smoke, and heat. If you need a compact style offset smoker to grill small amounts of meat, look for a small smoker. A small offset smoker will heat up quicker than a large smoker.

What is the Capacity of the Hopper?

The capacity of the hopper determines the amount of fuel you can add to it at one time. Regardless of the size of the hopper you decide to choose, you can always add more fuel to it during the cooking process without changing the heat inside the offset smoker.

If you go with a large hopper, you do not have to worry about adding fuel in between cooking. A large hopper works in your favor because it makes it easier to operate the smoker at the correct temperature.

The downside of a large hopper is that it takes up a lot of room and is a little difficult to clean. A small hopper is easier to clean because it does not have enough space for ashes to collect.

    What is the Temperature Range?

Since you will be smoking food, you need to control the temperature. Using excessive heat can dry out the meat, whereas using less heat can increase the cooking time. When you are looking for a reverse flow offset smoker, consider one with a wide temperature range because that allows you to cook several different types of food at various temperatures.

What Fuel Source Does the Offset Smoker Use?

You need to select a fuel source to use with the reverse flow offset smoker. You get two options. You can either use wood chips or charcoal. Both fuel sources will cook your food efficiently with the difference being that both will provide different flavors.

If you ask us, we would recommend you choose charcoal because it is easier to heat the offset smoker up and maintain the temperature that you need to grill your food. If you go with wood, it will enhance the taste of your food, but it will be harder for you to set the right temperature needed to cook your meat. With practice grilling with wood chips, you will be able to do it without trouble.

What Are the Dimensions and Weight of the Offset Smoker?

Since it is important to invest in a premium quality offset smoker, the smoker you choose will have at least 1/4-inch-thick steel construction body. Anything less than that will cause it to leak and wrap when you cook at high temperatures.

The thick steel construction will increase the weight of the offset smoker though. Make sure the place you decide to put your offset smoker can support the weight. Since it will have wheels, it will not be that difficult to move to other places. We advise you to select the spot you want to place your smoker beforehand because you do not want to buy it and then later find out that it does not fit there.

If you find that space stops you adding a smoker to your outdoor cooking range then maybe consider a new smoker grill combo. These make a great alternative if space is tight.

    Is the Smoker Multifunctional?

Some offset smokers give you the option of indirect and direct cooking to smoke meat. If you cook fish and cured meats, consider getting a multifunctional smoker.

What Additional Features Should the Offset Smoker Have?

The most important feature your offset smoker needs to have is an accurate thermometer because you will be grilling at lower temperatures for several hours. Your smoker should also provide you with the ease to adjust the temperature, so you can grill the meat to perfection every time without doing a lot of guessing.

Lastly, you want a smoker that you can easily and quickly clean after use. Smokers with grates coated with porcelain are easy to clean than basic metal grates.

This is one of our absolute favorite grills – how often do you see a portable smoker with a digital WiFi controller!  You can monitor your cooking and control the smokers’ temperature through Green Mountain’s iOS or Android mobile application, right on your phone or tablet!

This is helped by its Sense-Mate which is a thermal sensor which constantly monitors the grill temperature, so you can sit back and have a drink, safe in the knowledge that you can be informed of the grills’ temperature without leaving your seat, or worse still, opening the cooking chambers.

Although you need electricity to use it, the fuel for the smoking is achieved by wood pellets – perfect for that lovely wood chip flavor pairing.  (Our buying guide has more details on this.)

In addition to Sense-Mate, there’s also meat probes, so you can check the temperature not just of the cooking chamber as a whole, but also check the temperature right in the meat – you can’t go wrong!

    Buyers Guide

This buying guide assumes that you have a sufficiently big back yard or cooking area for a standard sized smoker grill combo, and that where you live or cook has the right weather conditions for offset smoking.

    Build Quality

Of course you will need a good build quality for your smoker grill combo.  In our top 5, we have exclusively concentrated on top well known brands and models to make sure this is covered. You might notice some well known brands like Oklahoma Joe’s were excluded from our list, which shows how competitive our picks are.

What we mean by build quality is things like: is it made from a heavy gauge metal, for adequate insulation, is it rust proof, does it have good quality seals.

We talk a little more about build quality in our other article Best Offset Smokers under $1000, which you can view at your leisure on this link.

    Size of the Cooking Surface

For us the ideal cooking space is crucial – you don’t want to find yourself without enough room for all the meat for all your family and guests.

There doesn’t seem to be a standard size for smoker grill combos as such, but you can be assured that all of the best smoker grill combo in our top 5, have a decent amount of cooking surface area.

    Fuel Source

There are various ways to fuel your smoker grill combo, and you need to choose the one that’s right for you.  Each has its advantages and disadvantages and we will walk you through them.

Gas, first of all, is very popular.  It generally heats up faster than other fuels and to add to the convenience, a gas smoker grill combo is easier to clean up than your other smoker grill combos. A gas grill however does nothing for the flavor of your smoked meats.

Charcoal based fuels is another common feature in smoker grill combos.  It’s fast to heat up and most charcoal grill and smoker feature an ash pan, so charcoal based smoker grill combos can be super easy to clean too.

If you wanted to go for a natural fuel source you could go with pellets.  Pellets are completely free of the artificial adhesives you find in other fuels, so your smoked meat taste won’t be compromised. Check out our pellet smoker buyer’s guide.

Now wood, my personal favorite, can really enhance the flavor of your meat.  They range in flavor strength from apple and cherry which are mild, through to pecan and hickory for a good medium strength, right the way through to mesquite for flavor with that bit more depth.

    Temperature range

Temperature range is imperative in your smoker grill combo.  Some people like to do their grilling at 165 degrees Fahrenheit, while you’ll want your smoking to be set between 200 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

We aim to cover temperature range in each of our reviews in our top 5 smoker grill combo reviews.  All of our picks feature built in temperature gauges, and some of them even sport temperature gauges that go directly into the meat itself for precision grilling and smoking.

To tweak the temperature of your combination grill, you can add heat by simply adding fuel, or you can cool it down by adjusting the vents and dampers.

    Ease of maintenance

Your grill smoker will come to you in excellent condition – and you’ll want to keep it that way!  We highly recommend that you purchase a compatible cover to go over your smoker grill combo when you’re not using it, to prevent it from rusting.

You may also like to check whether your grill smoker combo features easy ash removal, and whether the cooking racks are easy to clean or even dishwasher safe.

    Affordability

You won’t believe how much grill smoker combos vary in price!  Some are under $100 while others go up to $1000 plus! With our top 5 smoker grill combos, we examine value for money.  With us behind you you won’t be ripped off!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Why is smoked meat tastier?

When you smoke a piece of meat for a long period of time, the smoke physically changes the meat, breaking down the tough muscle tissue protein called collagen, thus making the meat more tender, and hence more juicy and palatable.

How does smoking meat help to preserve it?

Before the age of refrigerators, the smoking of meat was often implemented as a means of preserving it.  The smoke itself acts like an acidic coating on the meat’s surface, preventing the growth of bacteria. Furthermore, the smoking process also helps to dehydrate the meat, making it less hospitable for bacteria to live and grow.

If the meat comes out pink, does that mean it’s not cooked?

When smoked meat is done right, the outside will be dark brown and charred, then there should be a pink layer underneath, known as a smoke ring, followed by the traditional meat color in the middle.

So, in short if the meat has turned pink in places, this does not necessarily mean that the meat isn’t cooked.

How long does it take to cook a meal on a smoker-grill combo?

On average smoking takes 6 to 8 hours, but some items such as brisket can take up to 22 hours.

For a quicker meal prep you could just use the grill and not bother with the smoking chamber.

Should you flip meat on a smoker?

By all means flip meat on the grill but DO NOT flip the meat in your smoking chamber.  Since the meat is cooked from the smoke rather than over a direct heat source, both sides should be cooked evenly, negating the need to flip.

Not only that but if you were to open the smoking chamber to flip your meat, you will lose both heat and smoke from the cooking chamber and you’d be delayed as you wait for the chamber to get back up to the right temperature.

Can you offset a smoker as a grill?

Yes, it is possible to grill within the firebox of a traditional offset smoker, however it’s not what they’re designed for and we would recommend purchasing your smoker with all of your intended cooking methods in mind.

    Are vertical smokers better?

Vertical water smokers tend to be a lot smaller in size than their horizontal counter parts.  This means they’re more efficient in terms of not needing as much fuel to run.

What is a reverse flow smoker and do I need one?

A reverse flow smoker is one that will force the smoke back over the meat again before allowing it to escape from the chimney.  Whilst they do provide more smoke for your meats, they don’t generally come with grill functionality too.

    Accessories

If you are getting serious about upgrading your outside cooking area then add a versatile griddle to your outdoor range. A griddle gives you even more cooking capability, capacity and options.
