Weber Q1400 Electric Grill

Weber Q1400 Electric Grill Review

The Weber Q1400 Electric Grill is a new, updated version of the old Weber Q140 Electric Grill. The changes here are mostly aesthetic- updated handles, knobs, etc. This is a portable electric grill that plugs into an outlet and is for outlet use only- great for those who live in condos, apartments, or anywhere that has gas and charcoal restrictions. The cooking area is 189 square inches spread over two grills, each measuring 8.5” long by 12.5” wide for a total of 17” long by 12.5” wide. The interior is large enough to cook a whole chicken with room to spare. This grill fits on top of the Weber 6557 Q Portable Cart, which is sold separately as an accessory.

This grill includes a cast aluminum lid and body and two porcelain-enameled cast iron cooking grates. It heats up quickly and evenly. The Weber Q1400 Electric Grill is the perfect solution for urban dwellers who face restrictions on gas and charcoal use. Many reviewers on Amazon claimed they could not tell the difference in taste between this grill and propane or charcoal grills. Nevertheless, some offered suggestions for getting a more smoky flavour- place a small aluminum cup with wet hickory chips or apple wood below the grates so the wood will give off a smoky flavour, or purchasing a smoke box to place over the heating element. The Weber Q1400 Electric Grill is light enough to easily transport (for use in an RV or motorhome, tailgating, etc), weighing in at approximately 4-5 pounds.

Pros of Weber Q1400 Electric Grill

  1. Heats quickly and evenly
  2. Easy clean up
  3. Similar taste to gas or charcoal

With the lid on, The Weber Q1400 Electric Grill heats up and cooks in no time. The combination of lid down and effective heat emanating from the grates will sear meat quickly and efficiently just the way you like it.

Although it is not recommended to put the cast iron grates in the dishwasher, as the soap could damage the seasoned surface and cause rust, reviewers on Amazon felt the clean up process was simple and straightforward. Soaking the grates in the sink and then wiping clean with a sponge is sufficient- no harsh brushes or scouring pads required. Although not recommended by the manufacturer, some owners did place their grates in the dishwasher and reported no damage.

Many reviewers were dedicated barbecue enthusiasts and somewhat apprehensive about cooking over electric heat. However, this product seems to have laid any worries to rest. Reviewers were unanimous that the taste achieved with the Weber Q1400 Electric Grill was excellent and hardly discernible at all from traditional gas and charcoal methods.

Cons of Weber Q1400 Electric Grill

  1. Cooking area is small
  2. High cost; does not include cart
  3. Not made in the United States

Compared to some other grills, the cooking surface available is on the smaller side. There is space to cook for 3-4 people, but more than that may require more than one cooking ‘shift’. If you plan to host large gatherings, this is not a great option.

Some reviewers felt that due to the high price point, it would be a nice goodwill gesture for the manufacturer to include the cart accessory instead of selling it separately.

As Weber is a company that bills itself as proudly American, some owners of this grill were disappointed to learn that this particular model is not manufactured in the United States.

If you are faced with storage issues and home owner or condo association restrictions that forbid the use of charcoal and propane, there is no need to say goodbye to your barbecuing days. This portable electric grill is an excellent option that tastes just like meat cooked the traditional way. Although the price is somewhat higher compared to other competitor grills, this is a high quality grill that was universally admired by all reviewers on Amazon.
